Luke 5:8, 10-11 – But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying, “Depart from me for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” And when they brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
Observation-
Jesus has just performed a miracle in showing Peter and the others where to cast their net to be overflowing with fish after they had been fishing all night and catching nothing. Peter recognizes the deity of Jesus as he falls before him and professes his sin. Jesus reassures Peter to not be fearful. When the boats hit the shore, they immediately follow Jesus.
Application –
This story of Jesus’ miracle and calling the first disciples is a synopsis of the gospel I must follow each and every day. Number one, I need to recognize my own sin and need for a savior. Humble myself at the feet of Jesus and not see myself as someone who is religious and righteous. I can’t just be aware of my own sin and not do anything. My action needs to be to follow Jesus, grow more like him where people can see Jesus in and through me. My life needs to focus on Jesus and the great commission to in turn make disciples and teach them.
Prayer –
Father,
Thank you for loving me enough to send Jesus to save me from my sin. Let me recognize my sin, repent and humbly follow you to grow your Kingdom.
